📅 Your personal collection calendar
Collection days depend on your street — Stade is split into several collection districts. The Stade district provides a free online calendar: enter your street, see all the dates, save them as a PDF, subscribe by ICS in your phone’s calendar or set a reminder for the evening before.
Which bin, and how often?
The Stade district has four fixed waste streams — each with its own bin or bag. Collection follows the calendar strictly; put full bins out at the kerb by 6 p.m. the evening before.
🗑️ Residual waste · grey bin
🕒 In the town of Stade usually every 2 weeks (in outlying areas sometimes every 4 weeks).
✅ Yes: ash (cold), hygiene articles, vacuum bags, animal litter, broken crockery, heavily soiled packaging.
❌ No: organic waste, paper, packaging with the Green Dot, glass, electrical items, batteries, hazardous waste, rubble.
🌿 Organic waste · brown bin
🕒 Usually every 2 weeks; in summer (April to October) weekly in some areas.
✅ Yes: fruit and vegetable scraps (peel included), coffee grounds with the filter, tea bags, eggshells, bread, small amounts of cooked leftovers, grass cuttings, leaves, small prunings.
❌ No: plastic bags (including “compostable” ones), nappies, ash, bones, cat and dog mess, glass, metal, fabric, vacuum bags.
🟡 Recyclables bin / yellow bag
🕒 Usually collected every 4 weeks (every 2 weeks in most streets within Stade itself).
✅ Yes: light packaging made of plastic, metal and composites: yoghurt pots, film, tins, drink cartons, tubes, aluminium trays, polystyrene packaging.
❌ No: genuine recyclables that are not packaging (a frying pan, toys, CDs) do NOT belong here — they go to the recycling centre. Nor do: packaging with food residue that has not been rinsed, nappies, glass, paper.
🕒 Usually collected every 4 weeks.
✅ Yes: newspapers, magazines, leaflets, catalogues, letters, cardboard and boxes (flattened), egg boxes, wrapping paper without foil.
❌ No: coated paper (thermal till receipts), wallpaper, tissue paper, greasy pizza boxes, drink cartons, photographs.
Bulky waste, hazardous and special waste
Not everything fits in a bin. Here is how to dispose of the rest properly in Stade:
♨️ Bulky waste Large items such as sofas, wardrobes, mattresses and carpets. In the Stade district this is a paid on-demand service — book in advance online or by phone with the district waste department. The maximum volume per booking and the waiting time depend on the season.
🍾 Waste glass Containers around town (white, brown and green glass separately). You will find them at supermarkets and recycling points, among other places. Important: only deposit glass on working days between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. — quiet hours apply.
🔋 Batteries & rechargeables There is a free collection box in every supermarket, chemist and electrical shop. NEVER put lithium batteries (from power banks or e-cigarettes, for instance) in household waste — they can start a fire in the truck.
💡 Energy-saving lamps & LEDs To the hazardous-waste van or the recycling centre. Ordinary bulbs and halogen lamps may go in the residual waste.
💊 Old medicines In the Stade district they go in the residual waste, in their original packaging. Pharmacies take them back voluntarily. Never down the toilet or the sink!
🛢️ Hazardous waste Paints, cleaning agents, oil, pesticides, acids — these belong with the hazardous-waste van (the district publishes the dates) or go straight to the recycling centre.
🖨️ Electrical appliances Free of charge at the recycling centre. Small appliances (under 25 cm along the longest edge) are taken back free by any retailer with an electrical department larger than 400 m².
🪵 Garden waste Smaller amounts fit in the brown organic bin. Larger amounts (branches, tree cuttings) go to the recycling centre — usually free up to a set volume.
Stade recycling centre
The Stade district recycling centre takes almost everything that does not fit in the household bins: bulky waste, electrical appliances, rubble (limited amounts), old timber, metal, garden waste and hazardous waste. Some streams are free for households in the district, others are chargeable.
The address, opening hours and current charges are published by the Stade district — the information changes from time to time, so we link straight to the official page:

The hazardous-waste van
The hazardous-waste van calls at fixed stops in Stade and across the district several times a year. You can hand in household quantities of hazardous waste free of charge: paints, solvents, pesticides, acids, old medicines, energy-saving lamps and batteries. The district publishes new dates every year — residents also receive them by post with the collection calendar.
Practical tips
- Putting the bin out. Take it to the kerb by 6 p.m. the evening before, handle facing the road. The truck sometimes comes very early in the morning.
- Who pays? Tenants usually pay the collection fee through their service charges. The contract partner for the bins is the landlord — or, if you own the flat, you yourself.
- Bin broken or missing. Report it to the district waste department — repairs and replacements are covered by the fee.
- Full bin, missed date? Public holidays shift the collection days. The online calendar shows the replacement dates automatically.
- Organic waste in summer. Keep the bin in the shade, line it with newspaper and keep the lid shut — that deals with maggots and smell.
- Deposit bottles separately. Do NOT put deposit bottles in the yellow bag — take them back to the supermarket, or you lose the deposit.
Frequently asked questions
When is the yellow bag collected in my street?
Within Stade itself usually every 2 weeks, in the wider district every 4 weeks — the exact day depends on your collection area. To be precise: open the collection calendar above and enter your street.
What happens if 24 December or Easter falls on my collection day?
There is no collection on public holidays — it moves to the next working day. The online calendar takes this into account automatically. All the collections in the following week usually shift by one day as well.
Can I put ash from the fireplace in the organic bin?
No. Ash — even completely cooled wood ash — belongs in the residual waste. Organic waste is composted, so it must not contain any combustion residue.
Is bulky waste collected automatically?
In the Stade district you have to book bulky-waste collection — it is not picked up automatically. Book online or by phone with the district waste department; the date is confirmed in writing.
Where can I get rid of cardboard boxes free of charge?
In the blue paper bin, broken down. If you are moving house and have a lot, a trip to the recycling centre pays off — cardboard is free there.
Are “compostable” plastic bags allowed in the organic waste?
No. Even if the packaging promises “biodegradable”, in the district’s composting plant they do not break down quickly enough and are sorted out. Use paper bags or newspaper to line the organic bin instead.
The rules summarised here apply to the Stade district (as of 2026). What is legally binding is always the current publication of the district waste department. Please always check your own collection dates in the
online collection calendar.
